Reiki for Senior Animals

Just like ourselves, our animals grow old.  And just as we take care of our parents and grandparents in their highlight years, so too, do we need to take care of our pets as they become seniors.  Ageing animals can develop chronic conditions and alongside your holistic vets advice, Reiki is a perfect addition to promoting relaxation, decreasing pain, improving appetite, increasing vitality, and, also providing a wonderful space for you to share some truly special quality time with your pet.

6 Important Reasons to give Reiki to the Senior Pets in your Home
  1. Improved appetite. Many of the senior animals who have allowed me to give them reiki have regained their appetite, along with a joy for food. I recently offered reiki to a cat called Minnie (photo above).  She suffers from arthritis and her appetite was small and her weight low. After treatment with reiki her appetite increased dramatically, and, so has her weight.  She is blooming!
  2. Improved vitality.  I have often wondered ... What does vitality mean in a pet?  Now i have a little more experience i can ''see'' what vitality means.  It translates as a shiny coat, a clear eye, a healthy appetite, a joy in mobility, a connection to those around, dignity, deep restful sleep and a contentedness.
  3. Physical and Emotional comfort.  Many of our animals in old age will suffer from a number of symptoms including failing eyesight, deafness, muscle atrophy and aching joints.  Minnie also suffered from physical discomfort due to her arthritis.  She was stiff and limited in how high she could jump up.  After her reiki sessions she is able to move around with noticeably decreased stiffness and is able to jump up onto her humans' bed! (one of her favourite places). Reiki also gives emotional support to your pet, but, also to you, as their human.  To include yourself in a session of reiki mediation with your animal is a truly rewarding experience, helping you both to share a deep connection as you communicate from a heart level.  Also, hands on reiki, with the permission of your pet, includes that wonderful, and all-too-taken-for- granted, sense of touch.  Such a special gift that we have and forget to use.
  4. Renewed sense of belonging and connection.  How important is belonging to us, as humans? To me personally .... very important! Belonging helps builds a sense of security.  Our ageing animals also need this connection. Although they may be blind or deaf or take themselves off to their beds they still need to feel part of their family. Reiki supports them to feel connected to the family, encouraging interaction, whether it be a dog climbing off his bed to waddle over to the action or a guinea pig coming out of her cage to be cuddled.
  5. Hospice support. I once gave reiki on a regular basis to a ginger cat. He was suffering from tumors.  Through the reiki his quality of life improved bringing back dignity and grace to the last chapter of his life, supporting him through his processes on a mental, spiritual, physical and emotional level.
  6. Support for the Pets human.  Sometimes the illnesses of our pets can be painful for their  human. Pain from the human is picked up by the pet and this can cause an extra anxiety for the pet.  Reiki will help both parties
