This is a 6min speech i gave about Reiki to my Toastmasters Club. Toastmasters is an international group that teaches and supports its members to speak in public. Please note there is so much more to be said about Reiki. This speech is only 7 minutes long. How many of you in this room have heard of reiki?
How many of you believe that you have energy in your hands? What is reiki Reiki is a energy healing treatment that works holistically on the whole body, mind and spirit of both humans and animals. It is not a system of religious beliefs. It is simply a relaxing treatment using natural healing vibrations that are transmitted through the hands of a reiki practitioner (acting as a channel) into the body of the recipient. How could Reiki possibly work? Reiki works through the energy systems of the body. A human being is known to be made up of at least four levels of energy. First the aura which is an energy field surrounding the body. In my research I found that the aura was first measured scientifically at yale school of medicine by Harold Burr in the 1930’s. (picture of aura) The aura has electromagnetic properties, like light. Second, research by Valerie Hunt (not my sister) from the university of California has proven that there are concentrated local energy centres on particular areas of the body. These local energy centres are commonly known as Chakras. For those of you who practice yoga you may be familiar with this word. Chakras are vortexes of energy constantly moving and vibrating. The third is a network of pathways within the body that transport energy. These pathways are called the meridians. Meridians are the basis for any acupuncture treatment. These pathways are similar to the circulatory system. WE have veins and arteries that transport blood to and from the heart, the meridians on the otherhand are pathways that transport energy. The fourth are known as subtle energies. Albert Einstein described these energies “as known because of their effects, but, we do not have the instruments to detect them directly”. An example of a subtle energy is how the energy field responds to human intention or thought. This was directly measured by William tiller of Stanford university. Now the palms of our hands have been recorded as transmitting an electromagnetic wave. We have a chakra in each palm of our hand. Reiki works through this chakra or electromagnetic wave adjusting the imbalances of all of the body´s energy systems. Remember imbalances of energy are known to cause illnesses so reiki travels to the cause of the illness activating the bodies natural ability to heal itself. But in reality we know very little about Reiki. So what is the scientific community doing? Why do we know so little? Studies require funding … and funding is more driven and directed by the pharmaceutical companies and their profit margins. They want to focus on the chemistry processes of the body and surgical proceedures rather than the positive biological responses of the body in relation to energy. If the body has the ability to heal itself using the body´s energy systems the pharmaceuticals would lose their business. If the scientific community knows very little about reiki. Is it effective? My reiki master healed herself from a degenerative spinal disease after 6 months of self treatment with reiki. Cancer patients in the pittsburg university hospital reported significant improvements in sleep, attitude, appetitie, decrease in stress, lonliness and anxiety A friend of mine with a bleeding head wound used reiki to stop the bleeding. When he got to the doctor the doctor was amazed as the wound had pulled together and did not need stitches Reiki is being used by millions of people to heal themselves It is also being used in thousands of hospitals all over the world, incuding 2 here in Barcelona, Hosptial Llobregat and Hospital Clinic. So what can we say about reiki? In English we have a saying “the proof of the pudding is in the eating”. In spanish this means para saber los efectos del reiki tienes que probarlo. So ... try it! Anyone can have reiki in their hands. I have it and it has changed my life. Let it change yours. Pet-sitting is different from boarders (residencias), or doggie daycares, since by definition, it involves caring for a pet in its own home. Choosing a good pet sitter can be an anxious process as, not only do you need someone who is going to genuinely care for your beloved furry or feathery family member, but this person will also need to have a set of your house keys, so that they can come and go from your home while you are away. Petsitting is a professional job that deserves respect, if done well. It requires people with all the virtues, and, virtues are not something that you can pick out from a carefully worded CV. We need (and are expected to be) responsible, flexible, trustworthy, reliable, organised, good communicators, committed, compassionate, hardworking and passionate about animals. We need to create a strong bond with the human guardians as well as with their animals. Many people say that they prefer animals to humans, but, .................. really ............... animals and humans need the same things. They need to know they can trust you and that you will care. Pet sitting is also a job that takes place over holidays , during lunch hours, breakfast time and at bedtimes, once, twice or three times a day. As a professional pet sitting organisation i have pledged to offer quality pet sitting services for 365 days of the year. This is a huge commitment and requires a lot of forward planning, thought, care and hardwork. On Christmas Day this year we were caring for over 30 animals! To help me with this pledge, i need the right people, as i am physically unable to work everyday of my life for long hours. I am very, very lucky in that i have a great team. I did not find them, they found me, and i want to thank them from the bottom of my heart. I am very grateful for their flexability and willingness to work with me. As pet sitters we also need to be sensitive enough to pick up on any physical or behavioral changes in our pets. To help us do that i try to keep each animal with the same carer. This not only creates a strong bond between pet and carer but helps the carer notice changes in the animals health. JC (Jean Claude) was a big, chatty and very handsome ginger cat, full of character and very much an integral part of his family. He liked to sit on the dining room table to look out the window and observe the world outside. One night he fell off from this table, landed on the floor below it, and died very quickly. Sudden death in cats is not uncommon and there can be many reasons for it. Possible causes include trauma, exposure to toxins, urinary obstruction, and feline asthma but two of the most common reasons are heart disease called Feline cardiomyopathy or “heart muscle disease” and feline heartworm. However heart disease is the most frequent. Feline Cardiomyopathy When humans think about heart disease, they imagine a lifestyle-related problem. Too many beers, too many sausages, too many cigarettes, too much time in front of the TV, and too little exercise over the course of a lifetime are the recipe for a human heart attack. Heart disease is different in cats. The most common form of heart disease, cardiomyopathy, is not lifestyle related. That’s a good thing, since cats are natural couch potatoes. Cardiomyopathy is an organic disease that appears to have a strong hereditary component. Cardiomyopathy can affect any age of cat ranging from 6 months upward. It often strikes young, seemingly healthy cats. And, shockingly, the first symptom is often sudden death. (Other possible symptoms include breathing difficulties, exercise intolerance, or blood clots passing into the legs.) Cardiomyopathy often cannot be detected during routine physical examinations. Veterinarians listen to cats’ hearts during exams, but the hearts of cats with the disease often sound normal. The cats often will be symptom-free at home. How to prevent Cardiomyopathy Even though the disease is not easily picked up by a vet, it is a good idea to have your cat’s health checked on a regular basis. If you are concerned, talk to your vet. He or she can discuss your cat’s risk and determine whether diagnostics should be performed. Owners of cats who suddenly and unexpectedly pass away may want to talk to their vets about an autopsy to determine the cause, especially if related cats also live in the house. RIP dear JC. You were, and still are, very loved. Heartworm Heartworm is found in Spain as well as the other Southern European countries. The most intersting point for me is that indoor cats are also susceptible to a heartworm infection. Just like ourselves, our animals grow old. And just as we take care of our parents and grandparents in their highlight years, so too, do we need to take care of our pets as they become seniors. Ageing animals can develop chronic conditions and alongside your holistic vets advice, Reiki is a perfect addition to promoting relaxation, decreasing pain, improving appetite, increasing vitality, and, also providing a wonderful space for you to share some truly special quality time with your pet. 6 Important Reasons to give Reiki to the Senior Pets in your Home

How to Keep your dogs teeth healthy
Important Things to remember
Brushing your animals teeth
Training needs to start at a young age when they are curious and innocent! During times of affection lift up your animals lips, touch their teeth and gums. This is called ''imprinting'', and if these steps are taken slowly and happen in a loving moment or environment or with positive reinforcement, your pet will have positive associations. If you need to start to clean their teeth at a later age, then the above training needs to happen slowly, one step at a time, with patience and positive encouragement. On another hand your pet may love the taste of the toothpaste and take to having their teeth cleaned like a fish to water. But ...... the best thing is to prevent tooth decay in the first place This is a post that i have copied and pasted from a Facebook page. Such an honest and sad post from a lady whose intention is that other people learn from her experience. The message speaks for itself. Please take care everyone.
*Important For All Dog Owners* Since yesterday was such a glorious day, with the heat tipping at 30 degrees at one point, my mother and I decided we would take our two dogs out for a walk: our Staff, Capone, and our French Bulldog, Henry. We took them on our usual walk in the evening when it had cooled down a bit, along with a bottle of water for them both to drink when they needed it. About halfway through our walk, Henry started panting, like he usually does anyway because of his breed, but it got progressively worse. After having large drinks from his water, the panting only got worse, to the point were his chest was rattling, and he was plonking himself down in any shade he could find, refusing to move. After realising something was seriously wrong, we phoned for a family member to come and pick the four of us up to take us home. By now, Henry was exhausted, barely moving as he panted horrendously, trying to cool down. When we got back home, he had to be carried out in the garden where we sprayed him with the hose and placed cold, wet towels on him. Still, he didn't move at all, his eyes unfocused as his shallow breathing continued. When he started crying out, we decided he needed to be seen by a vet as soon as. We took him to a 'animal hospital' as the vets had long been closed by now, all the while Henry was unresponsive, forming a large puddle of saliva/sweat all over my arm, leg, and the backseat as I cradled his head. At the hospital, the nurses quickly checked him over, establishing that he had a high temperature of 40 degrees and confirming that Henry was suffering from heatstroke. He was promptly whisked away to be put on a drip in a cool room, crying as the nurse took him away. That was the last time I saw Henry. After not doing well over night, suffering a couple of seizures, the nurse phoned us at around 5 this morning to say that he wasn't going to make it and that it would be best to put him to sleep. They gave us time to talk it over, but when we phoned back twenty minutes later, the nurse informed us that Henry had just regurgitated a lot of blood and that he was only still breathing due to a nurse giving him chest compressions. She said an injection wouldn't be needed now, as once they stop giving him chest compressions, he'll pass on his own. We said okay. In a matter of hours, I had lost my dopey, lovable little Henry. The reason I have decided to share this, gruesome details included, is to not only convey how distraught I am, but to warn everyone who has a dog. This is how horrible hot weather can affect your dogs; the nurse at the hospital told us that along with Henry, three other dogs have also passed away due to heatstroke, and many other dogs are currently being treated for it. All in one day. So, if another extremely hot day decides to grace us, please keep an extra eye on your dogs, especially if they are a bulldog breed, carry a little extra weight, and have breathing troubles. If you want to take them for a walk in the hot sun, try not to make it too long, or go somewhere where there is lots of shade and your dogs can rest in it. Make sure they drink plenty of water and don't get too overheated. This also goes out to people who think it won't do any harm to leave their dog in the car while they pop to the shops; it can get twice as hot inside the car than outside and a dog can pass out even quicker. If on a hot day you notice your dog's breathing is rapid and they refuse to move at all - basically becoming limp and unresponsive - phone your vets for advice and take action quick. I can't bring Henry back - Capone has lost his little brother and is currently grieving, as the rest of us are - but this post can warn and potentially save other dogs, save other families from experiencing what we are. **I'm so overwhelmed with the response I have gotten. I didn't even think this post would get over 2k shares. With this post gaining so many shares and spreading so much awareness, I just wanted to emphasis a few points. Before taking my dogs for a walk, we waited until the evening so it was much cooler than mid-day. We took a special doggy water bottle with an attachable bowl on it and even checked to see if the pavement was cool enough for Henry and Capone to walk on.... but even taking these precautions, it still didn't help Henry. It was just still slightly too hot for his breed type. So PLEASE be more cautious in hot weather, even if you think it's cooled down. Even if this post manages to save even a handful of dogs, I'll be so happy knowing Henry still helped, even if he's not with us anymore** I would like to share with you a speech that i gave at a Toastmasters Meeting recently.
----- Who here has a dog? or a cat? or any pet? A spider or a snake (snakes fascinate me) Do you listen to your animal? Do you make an effort to understand them? Humans communicate through the spoken word and the through the written word. Animals on the other hand do not have the option to express themselves verbally nor do they have the option to write. They communicate in SILENCE So how do we start to understand the animals around us? The challenge for the human is NOT to humanise their animals, that is, to give them human thoughts or human emotions. A relationship between a human and an animal needs to be based on knowledge of that particular species of animal, on how it perceives the world through its senses and, on our own observation. As a professional pet sitter, I am extremely interested to know more about the animals I care for, but, my true passion lies in observing them. Dogs are great energy readers. Research from the American Psychological Association suggests that the mental abilities of a dog will reach that of a 2 to 2.5 year-old child. This means a dog will read its environment similar to that of a human child. This is truly astounding! Children are excellent energy readers and so are dogs. Dogs are finely tuned like a piano to the thoughts and emotions of their human guardians. For instance you come back from work and you have had a terrible day. Your boss has shouted at you and you feel angry and undervalued. You are tense and you have been sweating (and maybe are still sweating). Your body has pumped adrenaline into your system to help you cope with the situation. You may not be aware that your body has reacted in this way but as soon as you walk through your front door, your dog will know immediately. To communicate his or her anxiousness about your state your dog will communicate silently by not eating his food that night, or, by pulling extra hard on the lead. (Dogs will communicate in many ways depending on their personality) This communication is all silent. I have also noticed how dogs will behave towards each other before they sniff butt! Dogs have many subtle signs of communicating to one another and their owners. This is one example, they will lick their lips or their nose to convey to another dog that they are not a threat and that they dont want to be threatened. They want calm. I have seen dogs use this sign on their owners. (look out for it!) This is a slient form of communication. (see the book called "Calming Signals" by Turid Rugaas) I also look after many cats in my work and i have observed that when i walk through the front door of their homes they will flop down on the floor twisting and turning on their backs showing me their tummies. I have come to the conclusion (and it is only my conclusion) that this is a form of affectionate greeting, a welcome to a friend, that they are not a threat. I have also seen cats use this when a situation around them becomes too boisterous. They are gently saying "calm down". This is silent communication. I have looked after a rabbit that thumped its foot when it heard a noise outside on the street. It was warning me of danger, and if i was a rabbit i would have run to hide into the nearest burrow. There are no words in this communication. I urge you to know more about your animals, to try to understand how they experience the world through their senses and to observe them. BE with them. BE SILENT with them. But .... wait ... there is an added advantage if you take these qualities into your human relationships. By truly listening to the humans around you and by understanding how THEY experience THEIR world you will slowly create richer relationships. “BE SILENT, OR SAY SOMETHING BETTER THAN SILENCE” (Quote from Pythagoras) The pine processional moth (PPM) caterpillar has been spotted within Barcelona Centre. Information from the UK Government Forestry website explains: “PPM caterpillars represent a public health hazard because they have thousands of hairs which contain an urticating, or irritating, protein called thaumetopoein. These hairs can be blown by the wind into contact with people and animals, resulting in painful skin irritations and rashes and, in some cases, severe allergic reactions in some people and animals. The caterpillars have been sighted on Avinguda Diagonal near Francesc Macià and in Vila Olímpica. The caterpillar lives in spun, tent like nests in pine trees feeding on the needles, and the larvae will form a procession moving from A to B, in a single file, nose to tail column that is characteristic of this species. In this way they search for the perfect spot in the ground in which to dig and bury themselves to pupate into the moth a few months later. These caterpillars have a natural defense system of irritating hairs (urticating hairs) which they eject when threatened or stressed. Normally around the end of March the caterpillars pupate but maybe due to this years uncharacteristically warm winter that the caterpillar has been active earlier than usual and in larger numbers. They are extremely dangerous to dogs or any animal that comes into contact with them. My vet advised that if you think your dog has been in contact with a caterpillar, it is best to wash the infected area with soap and water and take it immediately to your vet. It is also important to prevent the dog from licking this area. If out walking in a park, keep an eye out for the caterpillars and the characteristic nests spun in between the branches of pine trees. Possible symptoms that your dog may have been in contact with a caterpillar: limping, tail between the legs, foaming at the mouth, irritation, pain and sensitivity, constant licking, swelling. |
